Rugs and Carpets Are Made Very Differently...

When I’m out cleaning carpets around North Devon, I often get asked the same question:

“While you’re here, can you just quickly clean the rug as well?”

It’s a fair question — rugs and carpets look similar, and they both live on the floor. But the honest answer is that rug cleaning isn’t as simple as carpet cleaning, and it’s definitely not something that should be rushed.

Most fitted carpets in homes across Barnstaple, Bideford and the surrounding areas are mass-produced. They’re machine-tufted, with fibres glued into a backing using latex. They’re designed for everyday use, heavy foot traffic, and regular professional cleaning.

Rugs, especially wool or traditional rugs, are often made using hand-tufted, hand-woven or hand-knotted methods. Instead of glue holding everything together, the fibres are tied or woven into the structure itself. Even the edges and fringe are part of the rug’s foundation.

Interesting fact: On many rugs, the fringe isn’t decorative at all — it’s actually what keeps the rug from unravelling.

Materials Change Everything

Carpets are usually made from synthetic fibres like nylon, polyester or polypropylene. These materials are tough, predictable, and very forgiving when cleaned.

Rugs are often made from natural fibres such as wool, cotton or silk. These fibres last a long time — some rugs last generations — but they’re far more sensitive to moisture, heat and strong cleaning products.

That’s one of the main reasons rug cleaning takes longer and needs a different approach.

Carpet Cleaning: Designed to Be Efficient

Professional carpet cleaning is done in place and follows a proven process:

  • Thorough vacuuming

  • Pre-treating stains and high-traffic areas

  • Hot water extraction or low-moisture cleaning

  • Grooming and drying

For an average room, this usually takes 30 to 60 minutes, with carpets drying in a few hours. It’s ideal for busy households, rental properties and holiday lets.

Rug Cleaning: Slower, More Careful, and More Involved

Rug cleaning is a completely different job. A proper clean usually involves:

  • Inspecting the fibres, dyes and backing

  • Deep dust removal (often more important than washing)

  • Colour testing to avoid dye bleed

  • Gentle washing suited to that specific rug

  • Careful rinsing to remove residues

  • Controlled drying to prevent shrinkage or curling

  • Fringe and edge detailing if needed

Rugs are thick and dense, which means dirt settles right down at the base of the fibres. Even rugs that look clean can be holding a surprising amount of dry soil.

Because of this, rug cleaning often takes several hours, sometimes spread over a full day once drying time is included.

Why Rugs Aren’t a “Quick Extra”

This is why, when someone asks me to quickly clean a rug during a carpet clean, I have to slow things down and explain. Using carpet-cleaning methods on a rug can cause:

  • Colour bleeding

  • Shrinkage

  • Texture damage

  • Fringe problems

What’s safe for a synthetic carpet isn’t always safe for a wool or hand-made rug.

Drying Time Matters Too

Carpets dry from the top down and benefit from airflow underneath. Rugs don’t. If a rug is dried too fast or unevenly, it can warp or lose its shape.

That’s why professional rug cleaning uses controlled drying, not just blasting heat at it and hoping for the best.

Long-Term Care and Value

Most carpets are designed to last 5 to 15 years before replacement becomes sensible.

A good-quality rug, if cleaned properly, can last decades and sometimes even increase in value. That’s why rug cleaning is as much about protecting the rug as it is about cleaning it.

Final Thoughts

While rugs and carpets might look similar, they’re very different when it comes to cleaning. Carpet cleaning is quicker and more straightforward. Rug cleaning takes longer because it needs to be done carefully and correctly.

So next time you’re having your carpets cleaned and wondering about the rug, it’s always worth asking — just don’t be surprised if it needs a bit more time and attention.

If you’re unsure what your rug needs, a quick chat with a professional can save a lot of hassle (and expense) later on.
